But don't worry, I'm not the bread and the knife.I LOVE THIS POEM
You are still the bread and the knife. You will always be the bread and the knife, not to mention the crystal goblet and--somehow--the wine
And of course I have some questions:
1) Why are you so deadpan, Billy Collins?
2) Do you have something against metaphor or simply the over-the-top or ludicrous metaphor?
3) If it is not raining on my roof, are you also silence?
4) Is it still imagery if you are discussing sounds?
5) Are the two of you all of these things all of the time, or do they switch depending on mood/environment?
6) Why can't we both be the bread and the knife?
Signed,
Cassandra Rose Blaise DeMarco
I'm glad I can see your posts again! I love your last question! I don't see why both people can't be the bread and the knife. There are two things there and two people, so why not?! If there is a metaphor explaining why only one person can be the bread and the knife I don't see it.
ReplyDeleteWith respect to your last question, I think that true companionship -- companion means etymologically "those who break bread together" -- involves sharing the metaphor of the bread and the knife. We might write to Collins about this.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, we can write a letter! And I will be the pen and the paper, and wsc2 will be the envelope, but don't worry, I am not the stamp. You will always be the stamp...
